Prayers of a rosary

Prayers of the Rosary

The rosary is prayed in a steady rhythm of familiar Catholic prayers, with each decade held together by meditation on one mystery from the life of Christ.

Opening prayers

Begin with the Sign of the Cross, the Apostles' Creed, one Our Father, three Hail Marys, and the Glory Be.

Each decade

Announce the mystery, pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and the Glory Be. Many groups also add the Fatima Prayer.

Closing prayers

After five decades, finish with the Hail Holy Queen and a closing prayer for the needs of the Church and the world.

The mysteries

The Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries help the prayer stay rooted in Scripture and in the life of Jesus.

Why pray it

What the Rosary Is

The rosary is not only a string of beads. It is a simple way to pray with Mary while contemplating Jesus through Scripture, repetition, silence, and intercession.

A prayer of attention

The repeated words make space for the heart to become quiet while the mysteries give the mind a clear focus.

A prayer for real needs

Intentions can be held before God for families, the parish, the sick, the suffering, peace, and the needs people bring with them.

A prayer for beginners

You do not need to know every prayer from memory. Listening, joining the responses you know, and learning by repetition is enough.

Make one yourself

Guide to Make a Rosary

A handmade rosary can be simple: a durable cord or chain, beads you can count by touch, and a cross are enough to make a prayerful tool.

Gather materials

Use 53 smaller beads for the Hail Marys, 6 larger beads for the Our Fathers, a centerpiece or marker, a cross, and cord or wire.

Build the five decades

String ten smaller beads, then one larger bead, and repeat until the circle has five groups of ten.

Add the opening strand

Attach one larger bead, three smaller beads, one larger bead, and the cross below the circle.

Bless and use it

Tie or crimp everything securely, then bring it to prayer. You may ask a priest or deacon to bless it.
